ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – With the Gray fox population across North America declining over the last two decades, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is funding the Virginia Gray Fox Project. The primary goal of the project is to map the current distribution of the gray fox across the commonwealth and to assess the evidence for decline using historical camera trapping from around the state.

To accomplish this, the researchers are conducting a state-wide camera trapping survey. One of the cameras was installed in Harrisonburg Media Group Operations Manager Frank Wilt’s yard in Dayton.

Researchers are looking to survey areas where foxes are found and cover a variety of habitat types such as suburban, urban, forest or pasture.
