SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Virginia State Police continue to investigate Sunday morning’s crash on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County that snarled traffic for several hours.

Sergeant Brent Coffey said in a news release that the mishap occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday morning when a tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-81. The vehicle ran off the left side of the highway north of the Toms Brook exit before colliding with a guardrail and overturning.

The driver – Shawn Alford, 59, of Grottoes – was not injured. However, more than 100 cattle were being transported in the trailer at the time of the crash.

A veterinarian responded to the scene to assess the livestock and 42 of them did not survive the crash, including 10 that had to be euthanized by the vet.

Alford was charged with reckless driving.
