HARRISONBURG VA: (Rocktown Now) -A tense situation continues to unfold in the north-end of the city as law enforcement responds to an ongoing incident involving an armed individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

Authorities were first dispatched around 4:00 PM to the 1200 block of Virginia Avenue following reports of a person in distress and in possession of a weapon. A heavy police presence quickly assembled in the area, and a shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents.

By 4:25 PM, Virginia Avenue was closed to all northbound and southbound traffic between Mt. Clinton Pike and Parkwood Drive. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

At 5:15 PM, police confirmed that the individual had barricaded himself inside a home with at least two other people. Negotiators have been working to establish communication in hopes of resolving the situation peacefully and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

As of 6:30 PM, the incident remains active. Authorities continue to advise residents in the affected area to remain indoors and follow official updates. Virginia Avenue remains closed between Mt. Clinton Pike and Parkwood Drive.
