HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – It’s the first Friday of August and that means State Tax Holidays are underway in Virginia and West Virginia.

The annual event happens during the first weekend of August, during which certain items can be purchased with state sales and use tax waived. This year’s tax-free weekend started at midnight for both states and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 4, at 11:59 p.m. in Virginia and Monday, Aug. 5 at 11:59 p.m. in West Virginia.

Eligible items include school supplies, clothing and footwear; hurricane and emergency preparedness products; and Energy Star and Water Sense Products in Virginia. In West Virginia, eligible items are mostly the same, as Governor Jim Justice explained in a briefing earlier this week.

“You can pick up lots of different stuff – clothing items, computer stuff, or all supplies for going back to school,” Justice said. “Take advantage of it. You’ll save a few bucks and everything, maybe you can buy a few more supplies. Our kids need them.”
