HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Harrisonburg City officials are considering an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to allow for the acceptance of cash proffers.

Vice Mayor Laura Dent brought up the idea at last week’s City Council meeting and she said she got the idea from over the mountain.

“Charlottesville has a special legislation that enables them to require those housing either build affordable housing or pay into a fund so we can build it elsewhere,” Dent said. “So what that got me to thinking is – if Charlottesville has that and we don’t have that, could we get that?”

Dent added that it would take a petition from state lawmakers to have a chance to amend the ordinance.

The topic was also discussed at last week’s Planning Commission; however, further discussions were tabled until December.
