HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia U.S Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have announced that over $98.5 million in federal funding will be earmarked for affordable housing, community development and homelessness assistance throughout the Commonwealth.
Some of that funding will be heading to the valley.
Kaine told reporters this week that housing is a top three issue for Virginia residents.
“With many people spending more than what has traditionally been thought to be kind of a fair measure of what percentage of your salary should go into housing, fair measures about 30% in most communities in Virginia now. Folks, especially low- and moderate-income folks, have to spend well more than 30%. And so we’re hoping that this funding will help deal with that problem.”
The City of Harrisonburg is getting over $491,000 to support a variety of community development initiatives while Staunton is receiving more than $328,000, and Waynesboro will be awarded over $167,000.
