ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what caused two kayaks to overturn Sunday afternoon in the North fork of the Shenandoah River.

Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson stated in an email that the call came in at around 4:30 for the report of an overturned kayak near the 7,100 block of Brocks Gap Road.

Deputies with the sheriff’s office as well as fire and rescue personnel responded and soon discovered a second kayak also overturned in the river.

Search efforts began immediately and at around 6 p.m. and two men were found dead in the river.

One was a 32-year-old from Timberville and the other was a 31-year-old man from Fulks Run. Their names have not been released as of Monday afternoon.
