STAUNTON, VA (Virginia Department of Transportation) – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

INTERSTATE 64 

*UPDATE* Mile marker 57 to 56, westbound – Alternating lane closures for overhead sign work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 206 to 208, northbound – Overnight right lane closures for installation of traffic sensors, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closure northbound from mile marker 221 to 222 for guardrail repairs, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday night. Shoulder closures northbound and southbound 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*NEW* Route 262 (Hermitage Road) – Eastbound right shoulder closures between Route 11 (Commerce Road/Lee Highway) and FR-Route 224 (Bells Lane/Country Club Road) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 636 (Old Goose Creek Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) intersection for pipe installation, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 24.

Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) for waterline installation, 7:30 to 4 p.m. through April 2026.

Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control near Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) for intersection and roadway improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 2026.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81 

*NEW* Mile marker 237 to 239, northbound and southbound – Overnight singe lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspection, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday night.

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes. 

Mile marker 240 to 246, northbound and southbound – Slow-roll traffic control (rolling roadblocks) for overhead utility work between 5 a.m. and 12 noon Sunday (Dec. 14).

*UPDATE* Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Closure of southbound off-ramp to eastbound Route 33 at exit 247A for ramp reconstruction, 7 a.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Friday. Detour in place. Single lane closures 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange projectwith completion expected in fall 2026.
