HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Harrisonburg fire crews responded to a natural gas leak that snarled traffic this morning on South Main Street.

Deputy Chief Ben Zimmerman reports that call came in shortly after 8:30 a.m. When crews arrived between the Auto Zone and Weaver’s Flooring, they found the natural gas line that contained the leak.

“This was a very small line,” Zimmerman explained. “So, we grabbed a couple of clamps and clamped it off to stop the leak and then followed up with Columbia Gas and turned the scene over to them.”

While the work was being conducted, South Main Street had to be closed for over 45 minutes, which snarled traffic.

Zimmerman says the cause of the leak is under investigation. He also reminds folks to call 811 before starting any digging project.
