HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – One individual was displaced Tuesday evening after a home in the Park View area of Harrisonburg was damaged in a structure fire.

The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center began receiving 911 calls for a report of a structure fire in the 900 block of Summit Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. Approximately 20 firefighters arrived to the scene, encountering heavy smoke and fire in the attic of a one-story home. The fire was contained within 20 minutes and completely extinguished within an hour. No injuries were reported.

The Harrisonburg Fire Marshal’s Office has labeled the fire as accidental and an investigation into the cause is ongoing. The home sustained at least $100,000 in damage.

“We are relieved that no one was injured as a result of this fire,” HFD Chief Matthew Tobia said. “Fortunately, alert neighbors noticed the fire and smoke coming from the attic area, alerted the resident who was not aware that the home was on fire, and evacuated promptly. We are deeply appreciative of our community as they demonstrate their commitment to each other on a daily basis.”

HFD was assisted by personnel from Rockingham County Fire Rescue and the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad. Personnel remained on the scene for approximately two hours assisting with salvage, overhaul and investigative activities.
