HARRISONBURG, Va.(EMU Athletics) – EMU Director of Athletics Carrie S. Bert has announced the hiring of Julian Stover as the next assistant coach for EMU Men’s Basketball.
Stover is no stranger to EMU, having served as an Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant during the 2022-23 academic year. He now returns to Harrisonburg following a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Alfred State in Alfred, N.Y., members of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).
“I’m really excited to add Julian to the staff,” EMU Head Men’s Basketball Melvin Felix said. “He brings a lot of energy and passion for the game. Julian will help us greatly on the recruiting trail, connecting with the younger generation.”
During his one season at Alfred State, Stover helped develop All-AMCC players Paris Jamison and Cody Schneider. In 2023-24, the Pioneers experienced arguably their best season in program history, going 15-12 and finishing third in the AMCC.
Prior to his first stint at EMU, Stover served as the assistant varsity coach at St. Alban’s School in Washington, D.C., in 2021-22. Stover also spent the 2020-21 season as a skills trainer for Breakthrough Basketball.
Stover played four seasons of college basketball at the NCAA Division III level. After his freshman season at Hood College, Stover transferred to Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, Pa. In three seasons with the Mounties, Stover left an indelible mark, finishing his career as the all-time school leader in free throws made (357), fifth all-time in assists (175), and 10th all-time in points (1,082).
“I’m excited to be back in the Harrisonburg area,” Stover said. “I’m look forward to making an impact with the men’s basketball team and the athletic department as a whole. I’m excited to get acquainted with the players, improve on last year and build momentum. We have a special group, and I believe we have the opportunity to turn heads this year.”
The EMU Men’s Basketball team opens up the 2024-25 season on Saturday, Nov. 9, when they play North Carolina Wesleyan in the N.C. Wesleyan Classic in Rocky Mount, N.C. Tip-off against the Battling Bishops is scheduled for 7 p.m.
