AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Staunton man, who authorities say is responsible for the serious injuries of a two-month-old girl will spend five years in prison.

An Augusta County Circuit Court judge sentenced Malik O’Bryan Strother to 10 years in prison during a recent hearing. However, half of that sentenced was suspended, according to online records.

In a deal with prosecutors last August, the 27-year-old Strother pleaded guilty to felony child abuse. In return, a second charge of malicious wounding was dropped.

The charges stemmed from an incident in March of last year in which emergency personnel had to perform life-saving measures on the infant before she was taken to Augusta Health for treatment.

Strother will also serve three years of supervised probation upon his release.
