STAUNTON, VA (Rocktown Now) — Staunton City Schools is receiving national recognition for its efforts to support at-risk students and improve academic outcomes.
At the 2026 National Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Conference, the U.S. Department of Education highlighted the division and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Nate Collins for their effective use of federal funding to help students overcome educational barriers.
Title I, Part D funding is designed to assist students facing significant challenges, including chronic absenteeism and other obstacles to academic success. During the conference, federal officials pointed to Staunton’s approach as an example of how strong leadership and clear goals can help schools use those resources to make a meaningful difference.
Through the strategic use of those funds, Staunton City Schools has significantly reduced chronic absenteeism, dropping from 31% in the 2021–22 school year to 12.6% last year. During the same period, the division’s on-time graduation rate climbed to 93%, the highest in its history.
“These results didn’t happen overnight,” Collins said. “For years, our team has worked side-by-side with students and their families every day to help them overcome challenges and reach their goals. This accomplishment is a result of the division’s commitment to every learner’s success and our belief that all students can thrive, regardless of their circumstances.”
The progress is part of a broader trend of improvement for the division. Over the past seven years, Staunton City Schools has moved from 105th to 35th place in Virginia’s academic rankings, reflecting significant gains in student achievement.
Superintendent Dr. Eric Irizarry said the recognition highlights the impact of collaboration and thoughtful planning.
“Staunton’s recognition at the national level showcases what can be achieved when strong leadership, devoted educators and the strategic allocation of resources work together for the benefit of our students,” Irizarry said. “I am very proud of our staff for their relentless support of our students and families.”
