ROCKINGHAM, Va. – Emergency crews are still battling several large wildfires in the Valley, including two that have now burned close to 3,000 acres in Rockingham County.

Chief Jeremy Holloway with Rockingham County Fire and Rescue says that the Peake Mountain Fire, due west of Harrisonburg, grew from about 500 acres Wednesday morning to roughly 1,100 acres on Thursday.

He told WSVA that firefighters have managed to save 60 homes in that zone. According to Holloway, the only structural damage so far was caused by a fire on the porch of a single, isolated cabin in the area.

He did confirm that the Peake Mountain fire was about 30 percent contained as of 8 a.m. Friday.

In Bergton, meanwhile, Holloway said the blaze there has charred around 1,800 acres since Wednesday afternoon. He said that crews there are focusing on backburning and other fire containment measures today.
