HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Sentara RMH received a $1 million pledge to establish the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic for cancer patients.

The clinic’s namesake, Twila Showalter, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014 and passed away three years later. Since then, the Showalter family has raised $100,000 to date for the RMH Foundation’s Hope Fund for Cancer Care.

Twila’s husband, Larry Showalter, announced the pledge at RMH on Thursday morning. He emphasized that supportive care is vital to a patient’s quality of life as they are receiving cancer treatment.

“Cancer treatment is a grind, and the supportive care clinic can help a person navigate it,” Showalter said. “There are so many different things that happens to people when they’re going through their cancer treatment. Everybody’s affected differently.”

Supportive care services can include exercise classes, mental health counseling and even providing rides to and from medical appointments.
