LURAY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Shenandoah National Park wants to remind folks that as you plan a hike with your pets, make sure to consider their needs along with your own.

According to an online post, rangers and search and rescue volunteers at Shenandoah National Park responded to a dog in distress near Overall Run Falls in June.

The dog reportedly experienced serious heat stress, suffered injuries to his paws from rough terrain, and could not stand.

The rangers conducted a carry-out operation for the dog, and he and his owner reached their vehicle safely.

The park reminds owners to:

  • Bring plenty of water and snacks for you and your dog
  • Know which trails don’t allow pets
  • Keep your dog on a leash that is no longer than six feet
  • Dogs can overheat just like humans, so make sure you check the weather. Consider skipping the hike on days when temperatures are too high.
  • Always clean up after yourself and your pet. Dispose of pet waste in a trash receptacle.
  • Choose hikes that are appropriate for everyone in your party, including your dog.
