STAUNTON, VA (Rocktown Now) — Six Shelburne Middle School Students are competing in the National Civics Bee, a nationwide competition aimed at inspiring young minds to engage with American democracy.

After an impressive first round where they tackled a three-question essay on ways to improve their community, Olivia Brooks, Asia Clerfius, Tzophia Francis, Ellen Miller, Promise Wayland, and Makiyah Williams will move to the next round.

On April 8 at Blue Ridge Community College, they’ll answer 20 civics questions and share their essay ideas with a panel of judges. The top three will win cash prizes ($500, $250, and $125) and move on to the state competition this summer.

One finalist from each state will have the chance to compete in the national championship in Washington, D.C. this fall.
