SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is reminding pet owners of the importance of keeping animals safe during the winter months.
Sergeant Julie Sabattis says owners should limit pets’ outdoor time during extreme cold, wind, or snow, and provide proper shelter for animals that must stay outside.
“Virginia law requires adequate shelter and protection from wind, rain, and snow. Make sure outdoor shelters are insulated, dry, and there is insulating bedding such as straw or beds.”
Sabattis adds that antifreeze and other toxic chemicals should be kept out of reach, and pets’ paws should be wiped clean of ice, road salt and chemicals after walks to prevent irritation.
Anyone who sees a pet left out in dangerous conditions without proper shelter should contact the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office.
