HARRISONBURG VA: (ROCKTOWN NOW) –
Close the book on the debate: The Rockingham County School Board has approved its long-discussed Supplemental Materials Policy that establishes two review methods where parents can challenge content they feel is inappropriate.
Board members voted 4-1 to accept the policy during last night’s meeting. Jackie Lohr was the lone dissenting voice.
The new rule sets up two channels for challenging material. Sexually explicit content would be subjected to review by a committee of staff and parents. Meanwhile, parents can lodge complaints about non-sexual materials with a school’s principal, who will then form a smaller review committee.
While some residents praised the board for their actions last night, others were concerned about the optics.
If a committee cannot reach a resolution, the superintendent will serve as the tiebreaker.
