Russell Sheldon “Elmer” Smith, III, 50, of Elkton, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2024, at his home. He was born September 5, 1973 in Harrisonburg, Virginia and was the son of the late Russell S. Smith, Jr. and Karla Gail McDonaldson Smith.
Russell loved hunting and fishing, especially bear hunting trips with his buddies. He enjoyed dirt track racing for a number of years, and riding motorcycles in his youth. He was a heavy equipment operator for Anderson Excavating. He loved his family and will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Tammy Smith of Elkton; daughters, Karla Rexrode and husband, Daniel of Broadway, Christy Smith of Elkton, who was his caregiver, hunting partner and best friend; half-sister, Rachel Knight and husband, Jessie of Bridgewater; grandchildren, Lydia Smith and Jaxon Rexrode; special aunt, Kimberly Hemp of Grottoes; best friend, Chad Davis of Elkton.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating. Burial to follow at Smith Family Cemetery in Berrytown.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the funeral home.
Gifts may be made to the Smith family for unexpected funeral expenses.
