ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Officials with the Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Department continue to monitor conditions across the area, and specifically the dams in the Briery Branch and Hone Quarry areas.

The good news is that at this time, there is no concern about the integrity of either dam and there is no need for emergency evacuations.

County Administrator Stephen King explained on Early Mornings Tuesday that there is a procedure in place if one of the seven county dams fails.

“We have reverse 911 notifications set up,” King said. “If you live somewhere in the county or the city, for that matter, anywhere in the listening area, if you do not have a landline, then you should register your phone with your local dispatch center so that you can get 911 notifications.”

Fire and Rescue officials are asking folks to stay off the rivers in kayaks, canoes, and other recreational devices until the water levels fall back to normal.
