ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is joining over 410 shelters nationwide and participating in “Empty the Shelters”, a reduced-fee adoption event.
From May 1-15, the RHSPCA will be offering “Name Your Price” adoptions for adult dogs, adult cats, small critters, and ktitens for all animals residing in the shelter located at 2170 Old Furnace Road in Harrisonburg as well as those residing in foster homes.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation is a national animal welfare organization which is dedicated to ending pet homelessness. With this event they are prompting a “national call for adoption once again this spring”. The foundation sponsors reduced adoptions fees of $50 or less per animal.
“Our nation’s animal shelters are facing a capacity crisis and need your help now. Adoptions have slowed while a surge in owner surrenders due to families facing economic and housing challenges has left tens of thousands of highly adoptable pets desperate to find homes,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Our Spring National ‘Empty the Shelters’ will support the adoption of thousands of pets across the country, helping shelters in this critical time. Opening your home to a shelter pet saves a life and creates lifesaving space to help another pet in need.”
Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA participated in four Empty the Shelters events last year, which Executive Director Huck Nawaz said was a great success, and hope this event will have similar results. “Shelters across the country have seen an increase in the number of dogs and cats. This adoption event is timely, and we hope the ‘Name Your Price’ adoption special will lead to many more adoptions. Our goal is to find homes for 75 pets between May 1 and 15.”
