ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — With the possibility of more snow shoveling in the forecast for this weekend, officials say, “Don’t forget the fire hydrant!”

Rockingham County Fire and Rescue released a statement directing residents to clear the area around neighborhood fire hydrants when heading out to clear walks and driveways.

Officials say that the time it takes for firefighters to dig out inaccessible hydrants could mean more lost property, more injuries, and possibly someone’s life.

RCFR says residents can make hydrants accessible by clearing a 3-feet wide perimeter around the unit, remove any snow or ice, and clear a path from the hydrant to the street.
