ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — New information from the USDA indicates the most expensive farmland rental rates are found in Rockingham County.

More and more local farmers are turning to renting farmland rather than attempting to buy it.

According to a new report from the Virginia Field Office of the NASS, Rockingham County has the most expensive farmland rental rates in the Old Dominion. For 2024 and non-irrigated cropland, the average rate to rent one acre of land was $112 per year.

In Shenandoah County, the average rate was $63.50 per year, Augusta came in at $56 per year, and Page County at $53 per year.
