ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.

Rockingham County Fire and Rescue recommends residents inspect holiday lights each year, throw away strands that have frayed or pinched wires, and read the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how many light strands can be connected together.

The RCFR also suggests watering live Christmas trees every day because a dry tree will burn very hot and very fast.

Keep trees at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, or heat vents, and make sure trees never block exits.
