GROTTOES, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Rockingham County Fire and Rescue officials are currently at the scene of a house fire in the Grottoes area.
According to Chief Jeremy Holloway, the call came in at around 10:15 this morning. When units arrived in the 500 block of 17th Street, they found smoke coming from the roof of the home and a person in the front yard suffering burns to the face and hands.
Units arrived on the scene very shortly afterwards, assessed the patient and determined we needed to fly the patient to seek additional assistance,” Holloway said. “So, we airlifted a patient to a medical center for advanced treatment.”
Holloway added that the fire appeared to be accidental in nature and possibly caused by an electrical issue. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control but not before significant damage was done.
The damage incurred by the fire is estimated to be around $60,000, according to Holloway.
“It’s not a total loss, but it is a good bit of damage to the residence,” Holloway said.
