ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Clerk of Circuit Court, Chaz W. Haywood, has announced the return of four historical volumes, the oldest dating back to 1812. These records were recently returned after undergoing conservation, reformatting, and digitization by Kofile, a leading preservation company. This project was funded by a $21,446 Item Conservation Grant from the Circuit Court Records Preservation Program (CCRP), part of the Library of Virginia’s Local Records Services Branch, and was awarded during the 2024 Grant Cycle.

The restored records include:

1. Burnt Deed Book 3, 1815–1818

2. Burnt Deed Book 23, 1850–1851

3. Land Tax Book, 1812–1817

4. Land Book, 1878, Part 1

Since taking office in 2007, Clerk Haywood has prioritized the preservation and digitization of all records. To date, the Clerk’s Office has secured a total of $1,098,691.90 in CCRP grant funding to protect and maintain these invaluable community resources.

“These preserved records, funded by taxpayers, are your records—a reflection of our community’s story and legacy,” stated Clerk Haywood. “They capture the history of our land, its transformations, and the people who shaped it.”

Deputy Clerk Megan Pullen added, “The CCRP program ensures these stories endure, maintained in the place where they originated.”

The restored volumes now join a growing collection of preserved records. To learn more about the Circuit Court’s online records management system and access digitized records, visit www.rockinghamcountyva.gov/online.
