ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors is set to propose a resolution to affirm support for Virginia’s 2023 “Farmland Protection” Law that prohibits foreign adversaries from acquiring agricultural land in the Commonwealth.

According to a release, Chairman Joel Hensley plans to introduce the resolution at this Wednesday’s meeting to emphasize that the County has a vested interest in continually protecting farmland for domestic food security, economic independence, and the County’s rural heritage.

In 2023, Governor Glenn Youngkin signed legislation making it illegal for designated foreign adversary nations—including China, Iran, and Russia —to acquire farmland in Virginia.

Hensley stated that his resolution does not add to the current law, but is, rather, a statement that affirms the Board’s commitment to the spirit of that law.
