ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors decided not to extend a citizen-generated comprehensive amendment that would have extended the urban growth boundary east of Cross Keys Road and south of Route 33. That extension would include four parcels totaling 111 acres.
Rachel Salatin, the county’s Director of Community Development, explained that the county reviews the comprehensive plan every five years, and the latest plan was recently adopted less than a year ago.
“It is rare to make such an extensive decision to growth boundaries. They are usually well thought out and have a lot of public input through the 18-month process in updating a comprehensive plan,” Salatin said. “It does seem more appropriate to wait for that five-year review period to hear such an amendment.”
The unanimous 5-0 vote not to extend the amendment came during Wednesday afternoon’s board of supervisors meeting.
Salatin added that the applicant could generate that amendment again in a few years when the board is scheduled to review the comprehensive plan.
