MOUNT CRAWFORD VA: (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A rainy Saturday evening didn’t stop hundreds of cancer survivors, family members, friends and supporters, from gathering for this year’s Relay for Life event in Mount Crawford. The ceremonies were moved into the barns at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Mount Crawford and included the annual survivors walk, luminaria ceremony and auction.
Chrissy Brooks, the wife of Virginia Tech basketball coach Kenny Brooks, opened the event, speaking about her experience fighting breast cancer. Brooks, diagnosed in 2023, announced she was cancer free in February of this year.
The Harrisonburg Rockingham Relay is the second of four relays, including an event at JMU and upcoming relays at Augusta Expo in Fishersville and in Shenandoah County, held at the county park in Maurertown. According to Whitney Minnick, Community Development Manager, with the American Cancer Society, Relay has raised over $132,700.00 so far. This year’s goal is $200,00.00.
