ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Rockingham County School Board voted Monday night to remove two books from the county schools.
The 4-1 vote to remove the books came despite the recommendations to retain them by Superintendent Dr. Larry Shifflett, who stated that the books did not contain sexually explicit content.
However, board member Hollie Cave explained during the meeting that “Perfect” by Ellen Hopkins, did contain sexually explicit material.
“There are 53 different pages that have of sexually explicit content and some of it is very graphic and egregious,” Cave said. “I am not going to go over those pages individually, but I do have them for the public upon request. But there were 53 pages of sexual content.”
The board also voted to remove “Tweak” by Nic Sheff with Cave stating that there were 10 different pages of sexually explicit content just in the first 100 pages of the book.
