ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Now that the General Assembly has passed its amendments to the state budget, local entities can start budget planning for the next fiscal year.

That was discussed during last night’s Rockingham County School Board meeting where Chief Financial Officer Justin Moyers told the board that there were three line items in the budget that were different than the governor’s budget.

He said the largest item of the three was the removal of the cap on how many support positions the state will fund.

“They are finally agreeing to take that cap off, which means they would give us more money towards our support positions,” Moyers explained. “This would be a pretty significant change in our budget. In the next few weeks, we will have a better idea but it could one to million dollars more for the next school year.”

The support cap was implemented during the recession in the late 2000’s and limited the number of positions within local school districts that it would support.

Moyers added that lawmakers are also looking to allocate more money toward special education.

No word yet if the governor will sign the budget as is or amend it. He has until March 24th.
