AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) — Two pedestrians were struck and killed while crossing a highway in Augusta County over the weekend.
The pedestrians, Opal C. Nelson, 83, and Carolyn M. Childress, 72, both of Staunton, died at the scene. According to a statement from Virginia State Police, neither person was wearing reflective clothing at the time of crash.
The crash happened Saturday shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Route 11 near the Valley Pike Farm Market. According to police, a 2003 Dodge Caravan was unable to avoid striking the two pedestrians who were crossing the highway.
The driver of the Caravan, Danielle N. Bennington, 39, of Mount Crawford, and a passenger, Joshua P. Compton, 37, both suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.
Police also arrested Kristopher E. Nelson, 41, of Staunton, after he refused to leave the scene. Nelson has been charged with disorderly conduct, misdemeanor obstruction, and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
Nelson was released on summons. According to online records, his first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3 in August County General District Court.
The crash remains under investigation.
