PENN LAIRD, VA (Rocktown Now) – A multivehicle pileup snarled traffic on Route 33 in Rockingham County earlier today.

According to Battalion Chief Doug Gooden, Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched shortly after 8 o’clock Friday morning in response to a report of chain-reaction crash on eastbound Spotswood Trail/Route 33 between South Montevideo Circle and McGaheysville Road.

Gooden says it took time to completely clear the roadway.

“Before they could get the vehicles moved, traffic was restricted for about 30 minutes,” the Battalion Chief said. “They never shut the road down. It was just a single lane (closure), so it backed up traffic for a little bit.”

While the accident involved four separate vehicles, Gooden reported that no injuries resulted from the incident.

The cause of the pileup is under investigation.
