HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — With critically low temperatures forecasted overnight on November 28, Open Doors will activate its Severe Weather Operations Plan for the first time this thermal season.

Open Doors operates a year-round, 80-bed emergency shelter but expands capacity during extreme weather events. When conditions meet severe-weather thresholds—including forecasted actual temperatures of 20°F or below—the program adds 20 beds to safeguard individuals.

“In our nearly one year of operations in our new facility we have rarely seen nights below full capacity, which is 80 individuals. This means that if the expanded shelter capacity is fully utilized, we will serve 100 individuals overnight Nov. 28,” said Dr. Nate Riddle, Executive Director of Open Doors.

“This speaks to the demand for shelter services in Harrisonburg– Rockingham.” Riddle added, “While the expanded capacity is only offered night-by-night as certain criteria are met, Open Doors is fortunate to be in the position to offer such services.”

Individuals seeking shelter should arrive at Open Doors at the Navigation Center, 1111 N. Main St., Harrisonburg, VA, at 6:00 p.m. Beds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The activation underscores the ongoing need for safe, reliable shelter options as winter temperatures pose heightened risks to unhoused and vulnerable community members.
