HINTON, VA (Rocktown Now) – One person has died in a residential fire that began last night in the Hinton area of Rockingham County.
According to Fire Chief Jeremy Holloway, crews were dispatched Tuesday night shortly before 11 o’clock for a reported structure fire on the 11-thousand block of Cliffside Trail.
“When crews arrived on the scene, they did find and remove one victim inside the structure,” Holloway reported. “Despite CPR, we did, unfortunately, have a fatality in that fire.”
No functional smoke alarms were found inside the dwelling, a concerning reality the Fire Chief said is all too common.
“We really urge citizens to contact your local fire department or county fire and rescue office if you don’t have a working smoke alarm, and we’ll provide you one free of charge.”
Holloway told Rocktown Now that embers rekindled early this morning, igniting a small cabin located behind the home.
Firefighters are expected to be on the scene for most of today extinguishing all remaining hot spots on the property.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
