AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — One person is dead following a car crash on Route 262 near Staunton on Monday.

Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality Monday afternoon (Dec. 22) in Augusta County.

Sergeant Jessica Shehan says that at approximately 3:24 p.m., a 2024 Audi Q5 was traveling northbound on Route 262 in the area of Middlebrook Road when a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander struck it head-on. The Mitsubishi had been traveling southbound on Route 262 before crossing the grass median and entering the northbound lanes.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, 40-year-old Stephen Sean McMahon, of Hays, Texas, died at the scene. McMahon was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Audi, identified as 73-year-old Alan J. Wallis, of Craigsville, Va., was transported to Augusta Health for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
