HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — North Mason Street in Harrisonburg will return to normal next week following completion of the temporary Complete Streets demonstration project this weekend.

Traffic adjustments are scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday to return North Mason Street to four lanes and reinstitute traffic signals.

Work will require the closure of southbound North Mason Street as well as cross traffic closures at Elizabeth and Wolfe streets, and a short closure of the Gay Street crossing. All work is expected to start Monday morning and be completed by Tuesday evening, weather permitting, after which the road will be back to its past configuration. Any changes to this schedule will be posted to the City’s social media pages.

City Communications Director Mike Parks says “this successful temporary demonstration project allowed community members to see and test potential roadway changes that could be considered in the future for North Mason Street, as well as to allow City staff to collect data on vehicle speed and volume, as well as bicycle and pedestrian counts, for the approximately one-month period the temporary project was scheduled to be in place.”

A survey is still available at tinyurl.com/n-mason-project, and will be for at least another week, where input is needed about the temporary changes which will help inform any future improvements to this corridor. Participants should be specific about their experiences on North Mason Street, including on what has worked well about the temporary changes and what has been challenging or undesirable. The City has received nearly 900 survey results so far.
