WASHINGTON—According to the recently released 2022 Census of Agriculture data, Virginia is in line with the national trend of having fewer farms and less farm acreage compared to 2017.
In 2022, the number of farms in Virginia decreased from 43,225 to 38,995, while farm acreage dropped from almost 7.8 million to 7.3 million. Small and medium-sized farms saw a decline in numbers, but there was a slight increase in farms ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 or more acres. Nationally, the number of farms and farm acreage also decreased.
The census highlights the challenges faced by farmers, such as increased regulations, rising supply costs, labor shortages, and weather disasters. Average farm production expenses have risen across the country, including in Virginia.
The average age of farmers has also increased. The Census of Agriculture, conducted every five years, provides valuable insights into demographics, economics, and land use on farms and ranches, informing public policy and supporting farms of all types and sizes.
