SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — It appears that the federal lawsuit that was filed against the Shenandoah County School Board after they voted to restore the names of Confederate generals to two schools last year will not be resolved this week.
The lawsuit was filed last year by the NAACP on behalf of five students.
A trial was scheduled to begin this week in U-S District Court.
However, after attorneys for both parties made arguments during a hearing on Tuesday, a judge decided to postpone the trial until December.
In 2020, the school board decided to retire the names of Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School, but after the board membership changed in January of last year, the new board voted 5-1 in May to restore the names.
