SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — It appears that the lawsuit that was filed by the NAACP against Shenandoah County Public Schools will be allowed to proceed.

In a ruling filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg, Judge Michael Urbanski denied a motion to dismiss the case.

The organization is suing the school division on behalf of parents of children who attend Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School over the school board’s decision last year to re-instate those names, who were leaders of the Confederacy.

During the 2020-21 school year, the school board voted to retire the names and for several years, operated as Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School.

In another ruling on Wednesday, Judge Urbanski allowed the plaintiffs to use pseudonyms so as to not reveal the students whose parents are suing for fear of retribution.
