ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Virginia chapter of the NAACP and five students have filed a federal lawsuit today against the Shenandoah County school board after the body approved a proposal restoring the names of Confederate leaders to two public schools.

The lawsuit, first reported by NBC News, argues that the school board created “an unlawful and discriminatory educational environment for Black students.”

On May 9, the school board voted 5-1 to restore the names of Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School.

Chapter president Reverand Cozy Bailey said in a statement that “the Shenandoah County School Board reaffirmed its commitment to White supremacy and the celebration of a race-based rebellion against the United States of America.”
