ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) – Rockingham County Public Schools (RCPS) announced that Drew Miller, Principal of Mountain View Elementary School, has been named one of Virginia’s Principals of Distinction, a statewide honor recognizing exceptional school leadership and student-focused achievement.

In partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) and the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) launched this recognition to spotlight principals who exemplify excellence in instructional leadership, school culture, and student success.

According to a release from RCPS, Miller is known for his high energy, sharp wit, and unwavering presence in the school community. He creates an environment where students feel seen, valued, and excited to learn. One example given was the school’s March Madness Read-a-Thon, he pledged to let top student readers pie him in the face, and the top two readers in the school earned the ultimate prize: shaving a mohawk into his head.

“I’m honored to have been selected,” said Miller. “This recognition represents less about me and more about the accomplishments of students and the adults who work with them. In my years in RCPS, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside inspiring educators who create meaningful opportunities for students and tirelessly support their growth. From the custodian at Montevideo Middle School who mentored at-risk 8th grade boys, to our current Superintendent who occasionally drives a school bus, each role, though different, is equally vital. Being named a Principal of Distinction is not just a personal honor; it’s a reflection of our entire school division. This recognition belongs to all of us.”

To qualify for this honor, principals must have served at least five years as a building-level administrator and demonstrated strong leadership in academic achievement, instructional quality, and the removal of non-academic barriers to learning. Miller was nominated by RCPS leadership and submitted a portfolio showcasing data-driven school improvement efforts and a commitment to student-centered practices.

“Drew Miller exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding principal,” said Doug Alderfer, RCPS Assistant Superintendent for Leadership & Academic Support. “His depth of knowledge and experience is impressive, but what truly sets him apart is his boundless energy and genuine ability to connect with students, parents, and staff alike. He is an invaluable asset to Rockingham County Public Schools, and we are proud to celebrate his well-deserved recognition as a Principal of Distinction.”

As part of the Principals of Distinction program, Miller will participate in a professional training symposium and complete a capstone project focused on improving student outcomes at Mountain View Elementary. The program will culminate in November 2025.
