AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Mount Sidney man on Monday after a pursuit on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Sheriff Donald Smith says a deputy was dispatched for a suspicious activity call in the 700 block of Elk Mountain Lane in the Afton area of Augusta County and upon arrival, the deputy located the suspect vehicle, a red Subaru, leaving the driveway where the call originated. The car went into the ditch and drove around the deputy in an attempt to flee. The deputy activated his emergency equipment, and the suspect vehicle refused to stop, exited Elk Mountain Lane onto Blue Ridge Parkway, where a pursuit ensued.
Sheriff Smith says the pursuit stayed on Blue Ridge Parkway the entire time, entered Rockbridge County, then back into Augusta County. Deputies utilized tire deflation devices to disable the vehicle. The devices were successful, however the suspect continued to flee running the tires off of the rims. A short time later, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed where he was subsequently taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as Scott Wayne Fitzgerald, 34, of Mount Sidney and was arrested and charged with Reckless Driving and Felony Eluding.
Fitzgerald is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
“I would like to thank Wintergreen Police Department, Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police for their assistance,” said Sheriff Donald L. Smith.
The crash is now being handled by the Virginia State Police.
