HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Highland County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested 55-year-old Charles Houston Smith of Monterey yesterday, June 23, 2025.

According to a release, Smith has been wanted since May 10, 2025, on several charges including Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Additional firearm-related charges. Willful destruction of property

Total charges include 6 counts of felony offenses and 2 misdemeanor charges.

Sheriff R-W Kelly said the collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service underscores their unwavering commitment to public safety. 

“We are grateful for the professionalism displayed during the arrest and relieved that the community was kept safe throughout the process,” said Sheriff Kelly

 Smith was taken into custody safely and is now awaiting formal arraignment.
