ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A Charlottesville man is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 64.
Kevin D. Taylor II, 29, was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries after being engaged by police early Wednesday evening. He succumbed to his injuries later that night, according to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller.
Waynesboro Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of Hopeman Parkway shortly after 5 p.m., where officers saw Taylor’s vehicle leaving the scene.
As police continued to respond to the scene of the shooting, other officers attempted to pull over Taylor’s vehicle, but initiated a pursuit when the vehicle did not stop. The chase continued on I-64 over Afton Mountain and ended when the vehicle ran off the eastbound lanes and crashed into the guardrail at mile marker 102 in Albemarle County around 5:38 p.m.
Shots were fired after officers attempted for nearly an hour to convince Taylor to surrender. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Waynesboro officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, by department policy. State police are continuing to investigate the incident at the request of the Waynesboro Police Chief David Shaw.
Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for final review and adjudication.
