HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Members of the General Assembly representing the 26th Judicial Circuit and District announced today, Monday, March 16, 2026, the election of Todd Gilbert as General District Court Judge. Gilbert was unanimously elected by the General Assembly following the judicial selection process.

“Todd Gilbert brings exceptional experience, sound judgment, and integrity to the bench,”
members of the delegation said in a joint statement. “He has earned the respect of colleagues
across the legal community and across party lines, and we are confident he will serve the citizens
of the 26th Judicial District with distinction.”

Gilbert served 20 years in the Virginia House of Delegates, including service as Speaker of the House, and chaired the Criminal Law Subcommittee of the House Courts of Justice Committee.

Earlier in his legal career he spent approximately fifteen years as a prosecutor and fifteen years in private practice as a criminal defense attorney.

He was also appointed United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia before resigning in August 2025.

Gilbert was then hired as a Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Page County in September of 2025.

Gilbert has served on the Virginia State Crime Commission, the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission, the Committee on District Courts, and the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP) Commission. He has also taught as an adjunct professor of legal research.

Gilbert received unanimous certification as eligible and qualified from the House and Senate
Courts of Justice Committees.

He will assume office on July 1, 2026.
