Judith Lynn Caricofe Shiflet, 80 of Hinton departed this life on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living in Harrisonburg. The third child of the late Willard Ervin Caricofe and Beatrice May Smelser Caricofe, Judy was born on December 15, 1943 and spent her formative years in Dayton. Following the family’s move to Harrisonburg, she continued to attend Turner Ashby High School and graduated with the class of 1962. Following graduation, Judy briefly worked for Walker Manufacturing before marrying Harry Albert Shiflet on December 21, 1962. As the story goes, their original wedding date was January 12, 1963, however, Uncle Sam called Albert to the Army on January 2nd so they went ahead and tied the knot and it was knotted for 61 years.

One of Judy’s most memorable experiences was the time she spent with Albert in Germany while he was stationed there in the Army. She spoke frequently of the people and places she met and saw and wondered what it might look like today over 50 years later. Upon returning back to the states, Judy and Albert’s son James Allen was born in 1965. In 1968, Judy began a career in banking with the First National Bank of Harrisonburg and stayed with that institution through six mergers ultimately retiring from Bank of America in 2003 with 35 years of service.

Judy was a vociferous reader, she found pleasure in most all forms of books. Along with reading, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, canning and putting up preserves in her younger years as time would allow. She also enjoyed traveling with many visits to Pennsylvania Amish Country and National Ruritan Conventions with Albert. One of her most memorable trips was out west in the late 90’s to visit an Army buddy in Wyoming and experiencing Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Badlands National Parks. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family and especially enjoyed the Smelser family reunion each year.

In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her brother Robert Ervin Caricofe and his wife Claudia of Hampton and her sister Joyce May Lough of Mt. Solon. She is survived by her husband Harry Albert Shiflet of Hinton, her son James Allen Shiflet and wife Melinda of Hinton, two brothers-in-law, Bobbie Lough of Mt. Solon, Leroy Shiflet of Hinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
