Joyce Ann Glascock Lyon, age 92, of Harrisonburg, passed away on May 15, 2024, in her home. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John, on January 19, 2024.
Joyce was born January 5, 1932, to the late Allie and Ophelia (Vaughan) Glascock in Virgilian, Virginia. She is also preceded in death by her only sister, Aliene Thornton of Martinsville, Virginia.
Joyce graduated from Mary Washington College with a major in music education. She taught music in the Danville, Virginia, schools, where she met her future husband, John. She later earned her Masters in Education with a concentration in Reading from James Madison University and taught in various Augusta County schools until retirement.
On June 12, 1955, she married John Thomas Lyon, Jr. Surviving them are their four children, Thomas (Wren) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; James (Carol) of State College, Pennsylvania; David (Cynthia) of Austin, Texas; and Catherine (Ioannis) Papayannopoulos of Ashland, Massachusetts. They are also survived by seven grandchildren, Clara, Elizabeth, Emily, Nicholas, Anthi, Thanos, and Julia, as well as one great-grandchild, Dominic.
Joyce, along with her husband John, greatly enjoyed teaching piano lessons in their home for many decades. They were active in their church, Trinity Presbyterian of Harrisonburg, and enjoyed volunteering in the community, including reading to the blind over the radio for many years. Joyce also enjoyed traveling around the world with her husband after retirement, as well as visiting her children and grandchildren.
Joyce will be remembered for her love of children, flowers, family and friends. Her children cherish memories of the custom-designed birthday cakes she made them each year. Her grandchildren relished her frequent letters written in her flawless cursive. Ever the Southern hostess, nothing pleased Joyce more than hosting an event for which she needed to produce a large quantity of food quickly and being surrounded by lively conversation.
A viewing will be held at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg from 6-8 PM on Friday, May 24, 2024. A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens followed by a Memorial Service/Celebration of Life at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg at 4 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
