ARLINGTON, Texas (JMU Athletics) – The battery of junior Jason Schiavone and senior Joe Vogatsky came off the board on the final day of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft, as the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively, drafted each on Tuesday afternoon.

Schiavone was selected in the 11th round with the 343rd overall pick by the Astros, becoming the 12th Duke drafted under head coach Marlin Ikenberry. Vogatsky, who was selected in last season’s Draft but returned for his senior season at JMU, was drafted with the 564th overall pick in the 19th round by the Pirates. Both selections were each franchise’s first-ever JMU player drafted.

With Fenwick Trimble getting drafted in the fourth round by the Miami Marlins on Monday, it marks the 12th time in program history that three or more players were selected in the same Draft and the most selected since four Dukes were picked in 2019. This year’s draft class joins the 2019 class as the lone classes in program history to have three picks in the first 20 rounds.

Leading the team with 18 home runs, Schiavone started behind the plate for all 61 games in 2024. He recorded a slash line of .284/.400/.620 while recording two triples and 12 doubles to go with his home run tally that tied for the sixth most in a JMU season. The Laytonsville, Md. native scored 52 runs and drove in 51, finishing second on the team in RBI’s. Behind the plate, Schiavone caught 23 runners stealing to lead the Sun Belt Conference.

Vogatsky becomes the seventh Duke to be drafted twice, returning for the 2024 season after being picked a season ago. Appearing in 27 games, the Warrenton, Va. native finished with a 3-2 record and a 3.49 ERA. He recorded nine saves, tied for the second most in a season in program history and the most recorded by a JMU pitcher since 2010. Pitching in 49.0 innings, the right-hander struck out 48 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .232 batting average. His save tally increased his career total to 14, moving him into a tie for second at JMU.
